DATA
What survey data types are out there?
Survey data can be categorical, ordinal, or text-based — each works best with certain visualizations. Here’s how to match the right Flourish template to the data you have.
1. Categorical data
Yes/no questions, demographic categories
For questions with set categories (like “yes” or “no”), bar charts or pie charts make response distributions clear and easy to compare at a glance.
2. Ordinal data
Likert scales, ranked responses or graded categories
When responses are ranked or rated (e.g., “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree”), a stacked bar chart shows the full range for each question.
3. Text data
Open-ended responses such as employee feedback
For open-ended answers, word clouds and summary charts highlight frequently mentioned keywords or themes so you can quickly grasp the main takeaways.

Choosing the right survey visualization
Different survey questions call for different types of charts. Picking the right chart or graphic depends on the question types and the story you want to tell.
The Flourish Survey template
As the name suggests, the Survey template is ideal for visualizing individual survey responses. It makes it easy to compare respondents’ characteristics and question responses by group, shade, or geographic location.
Flexible options
- Use built-in settings to group questions, reorder categories, or customize labels. If you’re mapping data, you can even add a custom base map.
Create a story
- Add your survey to a Flourish story to build a multi-step narrative, guiding viewers through your insights – all in our no-code editor.
Bar charts
Bar charts are the go-to for comparing responses across groups. For example, they work perfectly when you want to show how many people selected each option in a multiple-choice question, making comparisons between categories quick and easy to understand.
Stacked bar charts
- Stacked bar charts are ideal when you need to show parts of a whole – such as the distribution of agreement or sentiment levels on a Likert scale. They allow you to visualize how different categories (like "very optimistic" to "very pessimistic") are divided across a question, helping you see overall patterns at a glance.
Line charts
Line charts are ideal for visualizing survey data over time, especially when tracking repeated surveys at regular intervals.
- Track change: Monitor how opinions, satisfaction levels or key metrics evolve
- Spot trends: Identify long-term increases, decreases or seasonal patterns
- Compare groups: Show differences between demographics, regions or other segments
Pie and donut charts
Pie and donut charts clearly show how responses are split between categories, making them ideal for simple survey breakdowns.
- Show proportions: Visualize the percentage of respondents in each category
- Keep it simple: Best for questions with four or five options max
- Consider alternatives: Use stacked columns or bars if you have more variables
Heatmap template
When you want to cross-reference two variables, such as department versus satisfaction level, heatmaps are your best tools.
- Cross-reference data: Compare responses like department vs. satisfaction level
- Highlight patterns: Use color intensity to reveal strong or weak relationships
- Analyze multiple dimensions: Explore trends across different groups or time periods
Scatter template
Scatter plots reveal correlations, distributions, and outliers, providing a clear picture of the relationship between different variables within the dataset.
- Compare variables: See how two or more metrics relate to each other
- Spot outliers: Identify unusual results that stand out from the trend
- Track changes: Compare shifts in responses or sentiment over time or between groups
ADVANCED
Visualize complex data relationships
When survey questions involve more than one dimension or variable, advanced visualizations can help make sense of the data. These charts allow you to compare responses across several categories, revealing deeper insights.
Radar charts
Also called spider charts, radar charts compare several variables across categories, like customer satisfaction with design, usability, and support. The web-like shape makes it easy to spot strengths, weaknesses, and overall patterns, showing the relative importance or performance of each factor.
Bubble charts
Like scatter plots but with an extra dimension, bubble charts plot two variables on the axes and use size or color for a third metric. They’re ideal for exploring complex relationships between multiple metrics in a visual, intuitive way.
EXAMPLES
Creative ways to visualize survey insights
Word cloud template
Word clouds are a simple yet effective way to visualize open-text responses. By highlighting the most frequently mentioned words, a word cloud provides a quick, at-a-glance summary of what’s most important to your respondents. The larger the word, the more often it appears in the survey responses. This type of visualization is ideal for discovering recurring themes or topics in a dataset.
Clean your results
- Automatically exclude common words to surface what really matters.
Make it interactive
- Add animation, custom colors or pop-ups to your word cloud with Flourish.
Pictogram template
Pictograms are a great way to add a visual, human touch to your data by representing numbers with icons or symbols. They’re especially effective when you want to illustrate proportions or quantities in a way that’s easy to grasp at a glance.
Use custom icons
- Choose from a set of icons or simply import your own custom icons for a personalized touch.
Control the scale
- Decide how many respondents each icon represents for accurate, clear visuals.
Gauge template
Gauge charts are a powerful way to visualize single-value survey data, especially when you want to track performance against a target or benchmark. The visual format of a gauge chart, often resembling a speedometer, makes it easy to see where results fall on a scale – whether they're in a desirable range or below expectations.
Track progress
- See instantly if results are on target, above or below expectations.
Custom ranges
- Define color-coded zones with Flourish's user-friendly settings.
BEST PRACTICE
Turn survey data into engaging insights
When visualizing survey data, keeping it simple, clear, and focused on key insights is essential to ensure your message is easily understood. Here are some practical tips to help you get started:
Simplify complex data
- Focus on the key insights that matter most to your audience.
- Limit the number of variables shown in each chart for clarity.
- Use simple, minimal designs so your main points stand out.
Focus on data storytelling
- Link related charts together in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence.
- Use animations and transitions to connect insights smoothly.
- Provide context at every stage to guide the viewer’s understanding.
Maintain consistency in scales and colors
- Apply the same color palette across all your visualizations.
- Keep axis scales consistent when comparing related datasets.
- Match legend formats and placement to avoid confusion.
Use labels and annotations
- Clearly label axes, categories, and values so they’re easy to read.
- Highlight important changes or points with annotations and callouts.
- Keep labels concise but descriptive enough to add context.
Show reliability with confidence intervals
- Add error bars to show uncertainty or data variability.
- Use shading or axis highlights to represent confidence intervals visually.
- Include sample size information to help interpret results accurately.
Test your visuals with real users
- Share draft visuals with colleagues or target audience groups.
- Collect feedback on clarity, readability, and visual appeal.
- Make improvements based on points of confusion or misinterpretation.
