Flourish wins GEN Startups for News
Media-sector prize awarded at the GEN Summit 2017 in Vienna
We are delighted and honored to have won the 2017 Startup For News award from the Global Editors Network (GEN). The annual competition rewards early-stage startups “working on high-impact and daring solutions for the news industry”.
The jury considered more than a hundred applicants and selected a longlist of sixteen. This was reduced to a shortlist of eight in a series of online pitch battles. The eight finalists, from Argentina, Spain, Canada, US, Israel and the UK, spoke at the GEN Summit in Vienna on 21-23 June.
The jury was made up of Jeff Jarvis (CUNY and Buzzmachine), Angela Oduor Lungati (Ushahidi), Catalina Albeanu (Journalism.co.uk), David Cohn (Advanced Digital), Evangeline de Bourgoing (GEN), Kalli Purie (India Today), Maria Ressa (Rappler), Mohammed Haddad (Al Jazeera), Ricardo Corredor (Cure) and Tori Munthe (North Base Media).
Albeanu said: “It was a very tough decision … we had a very long deliberation process. We picked a great winner with Flourish. It is a great startup that can help newsrooms of every size, with various levels of skills. Their platform is a tool that journalists can use to include data in their stories whether or not they have worked with data before.”
